Santa Maria<\/strong> differs from the other islands of the Maddalena archipelago<\/strong> due to its geological features<\/strong>. It is made up of schist<\/strong> and not of granite and this is evidence that it is older<\/strong> than the other islands.<\/p>\n\n

The vegetation<\/strong> on Santa Maria island is rich but not wild. The island has a brackish water pond<\/strong>, a little precious jewel!<\/p>\n\n

The highest point on Santa Maria island is a hill just 49 meters above sea level called Guardia del Turco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

A road<\/strong> runs across the southern part of the island connecting the eastern side to the western one.<\/p>\n\n

The entire coast is very jagged<\/strong> and punctuated by many small islands<\/strong>, including La Presa<\/strong>, the northernmost point in the whole of Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n

Small and very green, Santa Maria is stably inhabited by some families. On the island, in the past, there was also a small monastery<\/strong> where some Benedictine friars who were escaping from Bonifacio sought refuge. They were effectively the first inhabitants of our archipelago.<\/p>\n\n

The beaches of Santa Maria<\/h3>\n\n

The most frequented beach<\/strong> is the Grande Cala di Santa Maria<\/strong>, in the south-eastern part of the island. Tourists love this bay<\/strong> because it is surrounded by rocks rich in vegetation<\/strong>, and some have built homes there. The sea becomes deeper as you move away from the beach, which feels like being on a catwalk<\/strong> that sinks into the warm turquoise sea<\/strong>.\u00a0This heavenly corner can easily be reached by sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Cala Drappo beach<\/strong> is an entirely protected area<\/strong>. Its shape is similar to a crescent and has very light sand<\/strong> mixed with pebbles<\/strong>. The colour of the sea ranges from blue to green and is unbelievably transparent<\/strong>. The beach is surrounded by low pink rounded rocks<\/strong>, covered by lush vegetation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Further north we find the two beaches of Cala Muro<\/strong>, where the crystalline sea water breaks against light-coloured rocks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
